IZES presents LuxHyVal and SH2AMROCK: advancing hydrogen valleys across Europe

 

Our colleagues Mariangela Vespa and Bodo Groß from IZES gGmbH, a key partner in LuxHyVal, have presented their work on two European Hydrogen Valley projects, LuxHyVal and SH2AMROCK, highlighting their contribution to the development of integrated green hydrogen ecosystems across Europe.

Both projects, supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, aim to accelerate the transition from individual hydrogen demonstration projects towards fully integrated regional ecosystems covering the entire hydrogen value chain — from production and distribution to applications in industry and mobility.

For LuxHyVal, the work highlights the progress being made towards establishing Luxembourg’s flagship Hydrogen Valley. The project brings together 17 partners from seven countries and aims to integrate green hydrogen production, infrastructure, industrial applications and hydrogen mobility while creating a model that can be replicated in other European regions.

A key part of this transition is ensuring that technological development goes hand in hand with social acceptance and stakeholder engagement. Within LuxHyVal, IZES coordinates WP6 – Social Acceptance and Environmental Assessment, investigating perceptions, expectations, barriers and opportunities surrounding the deployment of green hydrogen in Luxembourg. The team has already conducted stakeholder analysis and expert interviews, while a national survey is providing further insights into citizens’ attitudes, knowledge, trust and expectations regarding green hydrogen.

By comparing LuxHyVal with SH2AMROCK, which is developing Ireland’s first Hydrogen Valley, the work also demonstrates how different European regions can learn from each other while adapting hydrogen ecosystems to their own local contexts. Both projects combine technical deployment with economic, environmental and social dimensions, helping create replicable pathways for the wider hydrogen economy in Europe.
