What We Learned from Three Days Exploring the Hydrogen Value Chain in Luxembourg

A Collaborative European Effort

Organised by the University of Luxembourg, the training school highlighted the power of cross-border and cross-consortia collaboration. LuxHyVal teamed up with three fellow European initiative consortia: HyWay, GreenSkHY, and ValHyCon.

Together, these projects demonstrated how synergistic partnerships across research, mobility, policy, and workforce development are essential for building robust European Hydrogen Valleys.

3 Days of Innovation, Hands-On Learning, and Field Visits

The comprehensive agenda covered every dimension of the hydrogen economy, from production technologies to regulatory frameworks, social acceptance, and practical applications:

Day 1: Hydrogen Production & Decarbonisation Technologies

  • Exploring the Value Chain: Opening with welcoming remarks establishing the vital linkages between LuxHyVal, HyWay, GreenSkHY, and ValHyCon.
  • Cutting-Edge Research: Presentations spanned waste plastic upcycling into carbon nanotubes, hydrogen production via electrolysis (LIST), waste-to-hydrogen pathways, and decision-making frameworks for siting large-scale solar and wind hydrogen production in Portugal.
  • Practical Mobility Workshop: On-site participants traveled to Metz, France, for an interactive workshop with AFPA.

Day 2: Real-World Use Cases, Mobility, & Energy Grids

  • Decarbonising Transport & Industry: Key insights into hydrogen-powered public transit in Luxembourg (TICE), the RH2INE network, and green hydrogen in steel manufacturing (SMS-Group).
  • Hydrogen Valleys Blueprint: A deep dive into the European formula for Hydrogen Valleys led by Hydrogen Architects.
  • Interactive Field Experience: Participants experienced hydrogen technology firsthand with a ride on a hydrogen-powered bus, a guided visit to the PWChair Lab, an interactive Smart Grids & Energy System Planning workshop with Creos and the University of Luxembourg, and a cultural tour of the historic Belval Blast Furnaces.

Day 3: Policy, Digital Twins, and Social Acceptance

  • Safety & Regulatory Frameworks: Discussions on hydrogen safety and risk management (featuring the ImagHyne Project’s Fréjus Tunnel study), legislative updates, and regional ecosystem integration.
  • Digitalization: Innovative sessions from LIST introducing Digital Twins and BESSER frameworks for energy systems.
  • Community Engagement: A hands-on workshop dedicated to Social Acceptance—a crucial pillar for the successful regional deployment of LuxHyVal and broader hydrogen ecosystems—led by IZES gGmbH and LuxMobility.

Shaping the Future of Green Energy in Luxembourg and Beyond

As the coordinator of LuxHyVal, the University of Luxembourg continues to drive the creation of a regional green hydrogen ecosystem. By bridging cutting-edge academic research with industrial deployment and public mobility, events like the Training School reinforce LuxHyVal’s role in positioning Luxembourg as a strategic hub for clean hydrogen innovation.
